Seven years after the ‘Great Recession’ of 2008-2009 produced some of the most challenging global problems since the end of the second world war in 1945, we are asking the question as to whether the global economy is making headway.

We have seen most countries enjoying economic growth over the past two to three years to some degree, but there is no common pattern. Even within the European Union the picture is a patchy one, with Greece in particular continuing to struggle with its own structural problems.

We have seen employment rise in the UK and unemployment drop together with falling prices and economic growth. It all sounds good. But, unfortunately, the UK cannot operate in isolation.

In May 2015 the UK electorate gave a mandate to a Conservative government to continue to deal with the fiscal deficit and to put austerity measures into place.

But in the summer of 2015 it became clear that the Chinese economy was having problems. China is the 2nd largest economy in the world after the US and the world economy is very dependent on China remaining buoyant. We will look at the current problems with China in this ebook, together with other major concerns such as world trade, inequalities, investment and productivity.

We will attempt to see if the world is still ‘making headway’ or whether the recovery is in danger of stalling.
