At the end of August 2002 over 65,000 delegates and 100 world leaders from 174 countries attended the Earth Summit in Johannesburg.
The conference agenda was 'sustainable development'. Why was this such an important topic? And what exactly does it mean?
Nigel Tree investigates.

Summary of Key Points
* In August 1992 an Earth Summit on sustainable development was held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
* Since the Summit in Rio ten years earlier, poverty and population have continued to grow, together with environmental degradation., although the world economy has grown by one-third.
* Sustainable development could be defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
* One major problem is whether consumption could ever be sustainable.
* The conference agreed to improve the supply of water and sanitation to the 40% of the world's population that lack access.
* Public-private finance initiatives were seen as a means towards achieving sustainable development.
